What is Autism?

Having autism means that a person’s brain processes information, including information about their environment, in another way. The autistic person’s brain has physically developed differently than a neurotypical brain. Autism is a spectrum disorder, meaning that each autistic person is an individual, and their autism gives that person characteristics and qualities that are unique to them. Autism is lifelong and at different times a person with autism may require minimal supports, or more supports, in specific areas of their life. There are more than 30,000 Autistic individuals living in Nova Scotia.

Opportunities like Sensory Santa allow autistic individuals and their families to have access to the same experiences as their neurotypical peers.  The reduced lighting, noise level and crowds allow for those with sensory sensitivities to be able to participate in the beloved Christmas tradition of visiting Santa.

The Pictou County Chapter of Autism Nova Scotia provides support, networking, social and recreational opportunities to Autistic individuals and their families and loved ones. We strive to promote education about autism, service navigation, and provide an inclusive, fun, non-judgmental atmosphere where members of the community can participate in rewarding programs and social activities. For more information about our chapter please contact Kelsey Robson, Autism Support Coordinator  pictoucounty@autismns.ca 902-695-5505 or visit our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/AutismNSPictouCounty
